The Ramp Safety Challenge

Every catering operation faces the same high-risk moment: a tall, heavy catering truck approaches an aircraft under operational time pressure, often in low-light conditions, on a crowded ramp. The traditional method for managing this risk is a ground guide walking alongside the truck during approach.

The guide is effective until the conditions that make guidance necessary are the same conditions that degrade guide reliability: darkness, rain, ramp congestion, fatigue. Ground damage events during catering approach are among the most costly recurring incidents in commercial aviation. Airlines track caterer-attributable ramp incidents as a performance metric.

How Guideless Catering Technology Works

Collision Avoidance System (CAS) technology enhances safety during aircraft service operations by managing a catering truck approach through three enforced speed zones. Using sensor-based monitoring and control, the system helps maintain safe vehicle movement and operator awareness as the truck approaches the aircraft.

The result is a controlled and consistent approach process that helps reduce the risk of vehicle-to-aircraft contact, supports compliance with ramp safety procedures, and provides an additional layer of protection for personnel, equipment, and aircraft assets during docking operations.

Tortoise Zone (1.5 mph).

The outer approach phase. CAS begins active distance monitoring and enforces the approach speed ceiling. The driver cannot override the zone speed limit.

Snail Zone (1.0 mph).

Close approach phase. Sensors actively monitor clearance to the aircraft structure. Speed is hardware-limited.

Auto-Stop (2.5 feet).

At 2.5 feet from the aircraft structure, CAS executes a full automatic stop. The truck does not contact the aircraft. The driver confirms the stop and proceeds with platform operations.

From Test Flights to Fleet Deployment

We prototyped our collision avoidance system at Indianapolis International Airport in late 2025 under full commercial flight conditions. CAS-equipped catering trucks approached aircraft using sensor-based guidance, replacing the traditional ground guide for every approach in the test sequence.

Both operators who participated reported preference for the CAS-guided approach over traditional procedures. Safety technology that operators prefer gets adopted; technology they resist creates workarounds. At Indianapolis, CAS earned that adoption.

The prototype validated the technology for fleet deployment. A fleet order of CAS-equipped trucks is scheduled for Q4 2026 at LAX.
